Go green: IPGS offers Irish genealogy help

“Sources for Irish Research” will be the topic for the monthly meeting of Imperial Polk Genealogical Society on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 1 p.m., at Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 3140 Troy Ave., Lakeland.

Professional Genealogist Donna M. Moughty will offer help “to connect your links to Ireland.” She has been conducting family research for more than 20 years and specializes in 19th century Irish family history. She also provides consultations, research assistance and training.

IPGS meetings are free and open to the public. Programs on topics of genealogical interest are offered, including using the Internet.

Membership is open to anyone interested in genealogy. Annual dues are $15 for an individual, $25 for a family. A lifetime membership is $150 for those 65 and up.

Registration is open for the IPGS 2012 seminar featuring Dr. George Schweitzer on Saturday, March 3.

His topics will be North-South Colonial Migration Routes, Rivers to Trails To Roads To Canals To Trains, Obscure Genealogical Sources, and he’ll have a question and answer period. He is known for wearing appropriate costumes during his talks.

A noted genealogist who has written a number of books, Schweitzer received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Central College in 1945, master’s and Ph.D degrees in chemistry in 1946 and 1948 from the University of Illinois, a master’s degree in history of religion from Columbia University in 1961, and a Ph.D. degree in history from New York University in 1964.

The seminar will be held in the alumni room of the Charles Thrift Building at Florida Southern College in Lakeland.

Registration is from 8-9 a.m.; the seminar runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Registration is $45 before March 3 and $50 the day of the seminar. Continental breakfast and lunch are included.
