Wife of jailed Ponzi schemer charged
FORT LAUDERDALE (AP) — The wife of imprisoned Florida Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein is facing money laundering and other charges involving her alleged concealment of more than $1 million in jewelry.
Prosecutors filed the charges Thursday against 38-year-old Kim Rothstein and four other people. Court documents say the group conspired to hide and sell jewelry purchased with ill-gotten gains.
A lawyer for Kim Rothstein didn’t immediately return an email seeking comment. If convicted she faces up to five years in prison.
Prosecutors are seeking forfeiture of jewelry including a two diamond rings weighing more than 12 carats each, including an engagement ring. Other items include 10 valuable watches, gold and platinum necklaces and bracelets, earrings, gold coins and gold bars.
Scott Rothstein is serving a 50-year prison sentence for fraud involving fake legal settlements.
