TALLAHASSEE (AP) — State officials are warning beachgoers about rip currents caused by Hurricane Leslie and the remnants of Hurricane Isaac.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management says ocean swells caused by Leslie will affect beaches from Nassau County south through Martin County.

Officials say there also will be a risk of rip currents off South Florida’s beaches.

Leslie strengthened Wednesday into the season’s sixth hurricane. The storm remains far from land.

Forecasters say a remnant of Isaac was hovering off the Gulf Coast. State officials warn that could generate rough surf and rip currents off northwest Florida beaches.

Deputy state meteorologist Michelle Palmer warned swimmers to check warning flags before getting into the water and to stay within sight of a lifeguard.
