Sink embraces Bartow’s flavor

Alex Sink, chairwoman of FloridaNEXT Foundation, who ran for governor in the last gubernatorial campaign, was the keynote speaker at the Greater Bartow Chamber of Commerce's 2012 Champions Cup Awards banquet.

Terrie Lobb was the second two-time recipient, this year for the overall Champions Cup Business of the Year, which went to Terrie Lobb Catering. With her are Brian Hinton (left) and Rob Kincart.

The second of two Champions Cup Legacy Awards went to Gibson & Wirt, which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. The firm was founded by Ellis Gibson and E.L. Wirt, who had purchased another firm, Stanley & Stanley. It is one of the oldest insurance or real estate agencies in Florida in which a founding family member has retained ownership. Accepting were (from left) Steve Brown, Clyde Allen Gibson and Drew Guffey.

Joining Brian Hinton (left) who presented the Community Service Award, which went to Peace Valley Enterprises are (from left) Myrtice, Savannah and Chelsea Young. In announcing the winner, Peace Valley Enterprise has probably raised more money for good causes than any other venue in Polk County.

The" tables were turned" at the Champions Cup Awards banquet, and presenter Rob Kincart (center) became recipient Rob Kincart, as his company, A-C-T Environmental and Infrastructure was honored as Green Business of the Year. With Kincart are Brian Hinton (left) and engineering manager Ben Hilton.

David Little (center) graciously accepts the 2012 Champions Cup award for Emerging Business of the Year for his business, Crosswired Electrical Services. Defying a struggling construction industry, Crosswired is deemed one of Bartow's most promising new businesses.

Carl Locke Sr., (center) who founded SEMCO Construction was this year's Champions Cup Hall of Fame inductee. Locke, a Korean War veteran who won the Bronze Star, first founded Imperial Steel Corporation in the 1960s. In 1975, he began SEMCO Construction. Boswell & Dunlap was the first of two Champions Cup Legacy Award presented. The law firm was started in 1900 by Solon G. Wilson and Judge Clarence Boswell. This year’s third annual Champions Cup Awards banquet, at the Bartow Civic Center, featured keynote speaker Alex Sink, chairwoman of FloridaNEXT Foundation and most recently, Florida gubernatorial candidate.

Bartow, Sink told an avid audience, has a warm spot for both her and her husband, and with a reason. Anytime she and her husband travel to the east coast of the state, her husband insists on driving through Bartow.
