A former astronaut, the member of a national championship basketball team and two former members of the Florida Board of Governors are among the dozens of individuals who turned in applications to be on Florida Polytechnic University’s inaugural board of trustees.

In all, 54 individuals — 33 of whom live in Polk County — turned in their names to be considered by the Board of Governors, which will name five members of the board. The board released the applications it had received on Tuesday. Dozens more submitted applications to Gov. Rick Scott, who will appoint six members. Some applied to both.
