Memorial service set for Habitat for Humanity visionary

The memorial service for the Rev. Samuel St. John “Sam” Emerick, one of the pioneers of Habitat for Humanity, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the town hall at South Port Square, 23023 Westchester Blvd., Port Charlotte.

Emerick, 96, died Jan. 13 at Fawcett Memorial Hospital. He was one of the founding visionaries of Habitat for Humanity, serving as the first chairman of the international board of directors for the organization. Emerick also was instrumental in founding Habitat branches in Charlotte, Lee, Collier and Sarasota counties.
