PUNTA GORDA — As Bob Zeitler of St. Louis ogled the 60 or so cars on display at a monthly car show here Saturday, his eyes landed upon a bright red 1967 VW Bug, and a flood of memories suddenly filled his mind.

He was back in the ’70s, a newlywed with a baby on the way, a day laborer with just “a few hundred bucks” to his name. He needed a cheap, reliable car, and he needed it fast.
