CLEVELAND — One man has died and two others were injured late Wednesday afternoon when the small SUV in which they were traveling ran into the back of a stopped tractor-trailer on U.S. 17, east of Punta Gorda.

The accident, which occurred around 5:30 p.m., blocked northbound U.S. 17 about a mile east of Cleveland Avenue. Officials on scene rerouted traffic through the nearby Pine Acres mobile home park.

The three men who were injured all were in the red Kia Sportage that struck the tractor-trailer, according to Charlotte County Fire/EMS Battalion Chief Larry Lippel. While one of the men died at the scene, the other two were transported to area hospitals — one to Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers — with unknown injuries.

No one was injured in the tractor-trailer.

No further information — including names of those involved or possible charges — was available Friday evening.
