Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony set
NORTH PORT — The city of North Port Police Department and Fire Rescue invite the public to attend a Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the turnabout on City Center Boulevard near Station 81, off Sumter Boulevard. The welcome will be given by Police Chief Kevin Vespia and Fire Chief William Taaffe, and the invocation by the Rev. Eddie DeJesus of New Hope Community Church. The presentation of colors will be done by the police and fire department honor guards, and the Pledge of Allegiance will be led by NPPD Capt. Tony Sirianni.
At 8:46 a.m., there will be a moment of silence for all the victims of 9/11. Comments will be presented by Commission Chair Tom Jones, and the guest speaker will be Manuel D. Alamo, a retired New York City Police Department detective. “Amazing Grace” will be performed by Lt. Ed Fitzpatrick and Sgt. Scott Smith, followed by VFW Post 8203 playing taps. The closing prayer will be offered by the Rev. Pat Organ of San Pedro Catholic Church, with closing remarks by Vespia.
