The Harry Chapin Food Bank was the recipient of a $125,000 grant for a new 24-foot refrigerated truck through the Mosaic Foundation. The truck will be used to deliver food to partner agencies and to pick up produce and other food from area growers, packing houses, and retailers. The first delivery utilizing the truck was made to St. Vincent de Paul in Port Charlotte, where a mobile food pantry distribution was held Wednesday. Fresh vegetables, bread, canned and packaged goods, as well as juices were distributed. The food was dispersed on a first-come, first-served basis with each family allotted approximately 35 pounds of food. Roughly 15 thousand pounds of food was distributed during the two-hour period, assisting between 300 to 500 families. Here, volunteers from St. Vincent de Paul distribute canned goods to a young man, as others sign in at the entrance to the area to receive theirs.
