Local author warns of EMP dangers
LAKE SUZY — While millions of people were tuning into the premiere of “Revolution” on Monday night, a show about what happens when all electricity on Earth is wiped out, Don White was watching with a different set of eyes.
White thinks a scenario like the one portrayed in the show, which deals with the aftermath of an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, is in the cards for America sooner rather than later.
According to White’s theory, terrorists, or possibly a rogue nation, will detonate a nuclear device high in the upper atmosphere, causing a large-scale electromagnetic pulse that destroys all electricity and wipes out electronic devices. What follows will be chaos, a slow but agonizing descent into societal disarray, anarchy and eventual death for much of the population. It’s not fiction for White, it’s an eventuality.
“It’s not if, but when. It’s just a situation waiting to happen,” he said. “We wonder why it hasn’t happened yet, but there’s a first time for everything, like 9/11, which no one expected.”
White is hoping his latest book, “Nuclear EMP Threats — What Next?” will spark conversation about the possibility of an EMP, along with providing some basic know-how in order to protect your home and family.
It’s one of 14 books that White has authored, following a long career as a professional engineer and CEO of electromagnetic compatibility companies that held many government contracts.
White said the federal government has already made preparations for the possibility of an EMP, by “hardening,” or protecting, naval ships, Air Force aircraft, and major government buildings like the White House and the Pentagon.
But those preparations will mean nothing to the average citizen or privately held companies, who will be left to fend for themselves, White said. He thinks communities will be able to band together and survive, but major preparations will have to be made.
The book discusses the basics of an EMP attack, protection techniques and standards approved by the federal government, and theories of where the attack may actually come from.
White theorizes that one of the more than 100 missing Russian nuclear warheads could be used against us, possibly launched into our airspace from a boat just three miles off American shores.
“The weaponry is out there, and the delivery system is out there,” he said.
White is hoping that many will check out his book and subscribe to his forthcoming bi-monthly journal, which will carry up-to-date information and guest columns authored by guests like former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.
