Motorcyclist loses arm
in crash
PUNTA GORDA — A Bonita Springs man is in critical condition at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers after losing his arm in a crash Monday evening on Interstate 75 near Jones Loop Road.
Thomas LaBelle, 35, was driving his 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle northbound on Interstate 75, following Andrew Adame, 44, also of Bonita Springs, who was driving a 2003 Ford Taurus, when the accident took place, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. The crash took place at 6:15 p.m.
Both vehicles were traveling in excess of the posted speed limit of 70 mph, weaving in and out of traffic, the report states. Adame came upon slower traffic and hit his brakes, causing LaBelle to turn sharply into the grassy median in an effort to avoid a collision, the report shows.
LaBelle lost control of the motorcycle and struck the cable barrier that divides the highway, severing his right arm, according to the report.
Adame left the scene, but later was escorted back by authorities. Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Bob Carpenter said a CCSO deputy stopped Adame near Toledo Blade Boulevard on I-75.
The report does not state why Adame left the scene. He was not arrested, but charges in the incident are pending.
