DayStar Communications, a Port Charlotte telecommunications services company and a subsidiary of Sun Coast Media Group, on Monday closed on its sale to Atlanta-based Birch Communications, an IP-based telecom and managed services provider to small- and medium-sized businesses.

A sale price was not disclosed.

Sun Coast Media Group, which owns the Sun newspapers and other print and online media, reached an agreement of sale with Birch in August. Company officials said it will remain a customer of Birch.

DayStar, started about 12 years ago, is a facilities-based telecommunications service provider that serves customers throughout several major markets in Southwest Florida and other areas of the Southeastern United States. Those services include local and long-distance voice and broadband Internet access.

DayStar’s office is currently in Murdock. The building was not part of the sale. Birch officials said they intended to keep the business focused in the Port Charlotte area.

Some of DayStar’s 31 employees will remain with Birch, DayStar officials have said.
