Dredging begins Monday
Dozens of citizens turned out Wednesday to hear the latest developments on the massive dredging project that is set to begin Monday at Sunshine Lake and Sunrise Waterway, two bodies of water in the Parkside section of Port Charlotte that are overrun with blue-green algae.
Representatives from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Health, as well as officials from the county community development department, the Charlotte County Department of Health, County Commissioners Chris Constance, Stephen R. Deutsch, Ken Doherty and Bill Truex, and the management team from ProLime Corp. — the company handling the $1.9 million dredging operation — were all on hand Wednesday evening to answer questions from residents, who for the last year have seen the lake and waterway gobbled up by a gelatinous algal mat that is as much as 7 feet thick in some places.
