PHOTO PROVIDED
The newest mural in Punta Gorda, The Great Sculling race, has been completed, according to Ron Norsell, Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society president. The Mural Society is inviting the public to view the work by local artist David Lackey on the wall of the Punta Gorda Health and Fitness Club, 2905 Tamiami Trail. The mural, which faces U.S. 41 just north of Aqui Esta Drive, is the first of a series of four mural panels planned by the Mural Society for this location. The panels will depict the role of sports in developing this great community. The Great Sculling Race took place on Charlotte Harbor on Feb. 10 and 11, 1888. Donations can be made via the Mural Societys website, www.puntagordamurals.org, or mailed to P.O. Box 510516, Punta Gorda, Fla. 55951-0506.
