New voter identification laws are getting attention here in Florida at the same time similar laws are being challenged in other states dominated by Republican legislators. There is more than a suspicion that the real target is not voter fraud but discouraging Democratic voters. The similarity in the laws is not a coincidence. They grew out of a popular American custom.
