Mention Chinese cinema, and for most Americans you’ll conjure images of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li and other Chinese and Chinese-American action/adventure stars.

Chinese cinema in the 20th century is much more than an action/adventure genre. Other films tell the story of a tumultuous period in the “Middle Kingdom.” They engage with the diverse challenges confronting China and the Chinese people as they emerged from a century of Western domination.
