During my 24 years as an Army officer, I had the opportunity to observe firsthand many fine leaders in action. The good leaders uniformly had an excellent backgrounds in their areas of expertise. They were respectful and honest in their dealings with superiors, peers and subordinates. They surrounded themselves with the most competent people they could find and then worked closely with them.
