Dr. John Ralston Ryan, 97, of Riverview, Fla., passed away Monday, June 11, 2012, in Riverview.

He was born in Springhill, Nova Scotia, Canada, and was the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Baldwin Ryan.

John was a graduate of Mount Allison University of Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada, and a graduate of Dalhousie University Medical School of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and later served an internship at the Royal Victoria Hospital of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He practiced medicine and surgery for 15 years in Springhill, and in 1959, he moved with his family to Florida, where for five years, he served as a physician and surgeon at a Florida State Institution. John maintained a medical practice in Punta Gorda, Fla., from 1965, until retiring in 1990.

He is survived by his wife, Nita; daughters, Elizabeth (J. Thomas Blackwell) and Ruth (Donald T. Regan Jr.); six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A service was held Sunday, July 1, 2012, in Brandon, Fla.
