Donald Nelson Root, 99, passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born Jan. 26, 1913, in West Suffield, Conn., the son of Herbert E. Root and Fannie Sweatland Root.

Donald lived and worked in Connecticut as a farmer and a maintenance mechanic before retiring to Port Charlotte.

He is survived by his son, Donald C. (Anne F.) Root of Bloomington, Ind.; granddaughters, Elizabeth A. Root of Bloomington, and Sharon Root Hering of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Shannon Hering of Fuquay-Varina; and companion of many years, Mary Jane Williams of Port Charlotte. Donald was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Muriel Culver Root; parents, Herbert E. Root and Fannie Sweatland Root; brother, Burton A. Root; and sister, Eunice R. Colson.

Services are pending. He will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife Muriel Root at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte.

Arrangements are by National Cremation Society.
