John “Jack” Lane, 89, passed away Thursday, July 12, 2012.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, becoming a boxer and top-gunner in a B-24 Liberator. John was honorably discharged as a Gunnery Instructor in 1945, receiving the Purple Heart. After the war, he built homes for returning servicemen, later buying his own lumberyard, then becoming a hardware salesman in Michigan. Jack loved talking to people. His wit and humor will be greatly missed. Jack was a strong supporter of the Lions Club programs to help the blind. He and his wife Derith were longtime members of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Charlevoix, Mich., and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Punta Gorda, Fla. They enjoyed numerous dance, sailboat and garden club activities.

Jack is survived by his children, Derith (Rich) Garrison, Geoffrey (Cathy) Lane, Susan (Gene) Kushion, Edward Lane and Barbara Lane-Harrington; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wife, Derith.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, in Michigan. Donations may be made to the Lions Club, locally or to the International Headquarters, 300 W. 22nd St., Oak Brook, IL 60523-8842.

Arrangements are by Neptune Society.
