Dorothy H. Barclay, 84, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at Tidewell Hospice Inc. in Port Charlotte.

She (also known as Dot) was born July 26, 1928, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Sigrid Carlson and Bernt Olaf Hakanson.

Dorothy married Bernt S. Barclay Jr. in 1948, and raised a family in Greenwich, Glenbrook and Old Saybrook, Conn. She worked as a secretary at Citizen Savings Bank and Zion Lutheran Church of Stamford, Conn., and was a homemaker. An avid singer, Dorothy sang in the church choir and Capella Cantorum from 1970 until she became a full-time resident of Englewood, Fla., in 1980. She was also a charter member of the Suncoast Chorale and was active from 1980 until 2012. Dorothy moved to Port Charlotte in 2005. She was a dedicated mother, wife and grandmother.

Dorothy is survived by a daughter, Susan (Cap) Rice of Rotonda West, Fla.; son, Steven (Darlene) Barclay of Port Charlotte; grandchildren, Audra Rice of Largo, Fla., Amy (George) Schopfer of Parish, Fla., and Allison (Danny) Wampole of Palmetto, Fla.; great-grandson, Henry Schopfer; brothers, Ray Hakanson of Clearwater, Fla., and Gustav Hakanson of Long Island, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service and inurnment with military honors by the U.S. Coast Guard will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, at Sarasota National Cemetery of Sarasota, Fla., for Dorothy and her husband, Bernt Barclay. Memorial donations may be made to Englewood Helping Hand, 700 E. Dearborn St., Englewood, FL 34233, or Harry Chapin Food Bank, 3760 Fowler St., Ft. Myers, FL 33901. Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home and Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel.
