The white cane has the right of way. Members of the Florida Council of the Blind march across the street at the Venice Shopping Center to promote the white cane safety law.
Members of the Venice chapter of the Florida Council of the Blind, the Lions Club and Lighthouse of Manasota, which helps the visually impaired become self-sufficient, congregated Monday morning at one of the busiest intersections on the island in Venice.
The goal: March en masse across all four crosswalks at the U.S. 41 Business/Palermo intersection to draw attention to Florida’s white-cane safety law. The law protects the blind and visually impaired, requiring motor vehicles to stop when someone is crossing with the help of a white cane.
