John Miller Gettings, age 84, of Venice, Fla., passed away Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012.

He was born May 27, 1928, in Brookline, Mass. John was very instrumental in helping families move to the United States and assisting them in getting jobs and a place to call home. He was an avid sailor and golfer and was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. John was a good husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all of his family and friends.

He is survived by his daughters, Janet (David) Wagstaff of Belmont, N.H., and Laurie (Paul) Palmer of Westlake, Ohio; a brother, Lawrence Gettings of New Hampshire; and two grandchildren, Laurien Palmer and Paul Palmer Jr. John was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mary Gettings.

Services: A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at Venice Memorial Gardens. Farley Funeral Home in Venice is handling the arrangements.
